Finding old newspapers: obituaries, marriage notices and birth announcements

Last verified:

Old local newspapers can fill gaps that certificates leave: a death notice that names the survivors, a wedding report, a birth announcement. This guide starts with the free archives, then explains how to search them, and ends with a short, neutral note on one paid archive.

What old newspapers can tell you

ItemWhat the sources say
Obituaries and death noticesLocal newspapers covered deaths. The Library of Congress says full-length articles usually give a name in normal order, while death notices often put the last name first, and the Library's training slides warn that death notices and obituaries are not always in a separate section. [4][5] The National Archives toolkit names newspapers as a source of obituaries, and the Library of Congress genealogy guide names obituaries among the items you may find. [10][7]
Marriage notices and wedding reportsThe Library of Congress genealogy guide and the University of Maryland brochure both name marriage announcements or marriages as items to look for. The National Archives toolkit names newspapers as a source of wedding notices. [7][11][10] The Library's blog suggests adding words such as marriage, engagement and wedding to your search, and the Maryland brochure suggests synonyms such as "nuptial". [4][11]
Birth announcementsThe National Archives toolkit names newspapers as a source of birth notices, and the Maryland brochure lists births as a newspaper section to browse. [10][11]
Legal noticesThe Maryland brochure lists legal notices among the newspaper sections that can help genealogists. We found no official page that says what kinds of legal notice to expect, so we do not describe them further. [11]
Divorce noticesNot confirmed on the official pages we read.

Program names and institutions below come from the University of Oregon list [13]. We did not open every site: some blocked our fetch tool and a few links did not respond, so we link only the ones that opened or only refused automated access, and we do not say what any of them holds or charges. For states marked "Chronicling America", that list says the content is hosted there.
